About Us

Aunties & Uncles Illawarra

Aunties and Uncles has been established in the Illawarra region since 1994.

History

Aunties and Uncles was first established over 25 years ago by Rose Brooke who began taking street children into her farm at Terrey Hills and then to Bundeena where the first Aunties and Uncles organisation was born.

Staff

Berta is the co-ordinator of Aunties and Uncles Illawarra. She will assess the needs of parents and children. She will meet with the parent, and where necessary, she will link the children to an Auntie & Uncle. She is then available to the Auntie and Uncle, Parent and children for ongoing support.

Our co-ordinator is a caring and trusted friend (not welfare) who will take the time to let the mother or parent talk. The co-ordinator just listens to what the parent has to say. Often this is the first time in their life that anyone has heard what they have to say.

We don’t go into band aid the situation and produce material things. We want to break the cycle and make a difference in the children’s lives.

By linking a child to a volunteer family, with whom they can build and develop a close relationship, someone that can be there for them in times of need, we are creating a support system that can make a great difference in the child’s life.

Management Committee

Local Management Committee has been formed and meets regularly in Corrimal Community Centre. New Members are always welcome.

Funding

We are funded by the State Government trough the Department of Community Services. The funding just covers the part-time wages of our co-ordinator and administrative requirements.

The Management Committee is open to: SPONSORSHIP, DONATIONS, and CREATIVE IDEAS. (Our service is grossly under-funded and new ideas for fundraising are always welcome).

We are a Charity, and Tax exempted, any donations over $2 are Tax deductible.
